Binary vs Matrix vs Unilevel — Which MLM Plan Needs What Software

A binary plan places every distributor above exactly two others — a left leg and a right leg. Commissions are paid when both legs hit a matching sales or recruitment volume, known as a "pair."

The software must track volume separately for each leg, match pairs as they occur, carry over unmatched (weaker-leg) volume correctly, and cap daily or weekly payouts if the plan has a ceiling. Get the weaker-leg carryover wrong and distributors either get overpaid or underpaid — and both are expensive to fix retroactively.

Matrix Plan — Fixed Width and Depth, Spillover Rules

A matrix plan (commonly 3x3, 5x5 or similar) limits how many people a distributor can sponsor directly (width) and how many levels commissions flow through (depth). Once a distributor's row is full, new recruits "spill over" to the next open position underneath them.

The software has to enforce the width/depth limits automatically, place overflow recruits correctly, and calculate commissions level by level up to the plan's depth cap. This is more structurally rigid than binary, so the placement logic needs to be airtight — a single misplaced node can cascade errors through the whole matrix.

Unilevel Plan — Flat, Unlimited Width, Simpler Tracking

A unilevel plan lets a distributor sponsor unlimited people directly, with commissions paid as a flat percentage down a set number of levels. There's no leg-balancing or spillover to manage.

This is the simplest plan to build software for. The main requirements are accurate level tracking (who is level 1, 2, 3 relative to each distributor) and straightforward percentage-based commission calculation per level — no matching or placement rules to enforce.

Generation Plan — Commissions by Recruitment Depth

A generation plan pays commissions in bands based on "generations" — groups of distributors separated by recruitment milestones, rather than simple levels. It's often layered on top of a unilevel or matrix structure.

The software needs to correctly identify generation boundaries (which is more complex than counting levels), then apply different commission rates per generation. Hybrid plans that combine generation logic with binary or matrix structures are the most complex to build and require the most upfront business-rules mapping.
